TAG: The acronym, the identifier, the iconography, the game...

Deer Heads...was recorded at Terminal Studios by Randy Everett in the evening of the 24th of July 2011, following a weekend of concerts in NOLA and JXNMS. Five pieces were recorded, including Kintsugi--my extended form, graphic score/chamber music piece, with Evan as “the clocker”--written to explore the group interaction of sound and silence, time and space. Four additional “instant music” improvisations were also recorded, with the results in sharp contrast to the longer, more formal piece.
We agreed that the Kintsugi performance in its entirety made for less interesting listening, given performance factors such as live vs. recording, sparse and quiet sections, and a duration that made it more difficult for many listeners to remain immersed and engaged. What was also evident was that elements explored in Kintsugi now existed in the “instant” pieces and indicated that the larger work was not in vain. Will and Chris were listening and playing with a deep sense of intuitive, integrated thought and action. Nonetheless the recordings sat undisturbed for almost 10 years.
Thankfully, Chris has seen a way to reimagine the project. He has taken the resulting tracks, edited, mixed, and ordered the pieces into their current form, with “the studio as instrument” allowing us to hear these pieces in a new way.
Jung wrote about “...the coincidence of events in space and time as meaning something more than chance...” and TAG chose sound events and the ritual of performance to explore the meaningful experiences created in those moments. Curiosity, preparation, and experience guide TAG in their music together--not just coincidence or chance. The game still continues, sometimes with invitations to additional like-minded players for TAG-URIT, making the trio a quartet. But that's another story. Here's this one:
