ON “TURNING ON OUR OWN TIME” (Chris Alford and Justin Peake)

“I am sitting in a room...” -Alvin Lucier

I use this epigraph of the music by Lucier, not because of similar processes of his piece from 1969, but because of the importance of the acoustics of a chamber--the “container,” so to speak--that absorbs and reflects the waves of vibrations, the SOUND as it is created in the moments when it is picked up and transformed by microphones.

The SOUND as possibility.

CHAMBER music: the container, the room, the body. ALL music and listening comes from this. All sound exists and is defined by a container. The release of sound with INTENTION brings us what we hear as the possibility of MUSIC.

But what is the sound of LISTENING?

“TURNING ON.” Depending on your age, the phrase may have multiple meanings and conjure some mystical significance, especially when applied to a musical context.

“OUR OWN TIME.” Yes. Both in time and space, Peake and Alford bring the senses to a focus with discernible boundaries, like the way a recording can capture both sound and no sound, allowing you to hear the silences that surround the notes. CHAMBER MUSIC: a container, possibly meant for listening.

Alford and Peake are capturing an acoustic counterpoint, with the intimate nature of the space
providing the medium. Here you, the listener, are important.

Here, we find sound solidifying in an instant, to where we may recognize the signature of folk, then jazz, then the chromaticism of contemporary classical. Within the chamber, the sounds shift and become the OTHER.

Sitting here in the summer of 2020, “our own time” leaves us with the DESIRE for intimacy. HERE, in this music, we document a “turning on,” a move closer to each other, a reduction of the space between the performer and the listener. Intimate contact.

How do we judge the ephemeral? How do we judge a cloud?
